Music Monday: Will singing “One Song Glory” from RENT
Welcome to a new feature here at Gleeks United! Each and every Monday will be a Music Monday, where I wax poetic about a song I want to see performed on Glee. Lately I find that I’ll be listening to a song I like and then I’ll start imagining how it could be done on Glee, so I thought I would share the fantasy performances in my head with all of you!
To kick off the feature, this week’s fantasy performance is Will singing “One Song Glory” from RENT, originally performed by Adam Pascal who was the first (and most famous) actor to play the character of Roger. The 1996 Original Broadway Cast recording of the song is below:
Being that Matthew Morrison is a Broadway boy himself, I’d love to see him take on a song from a musical, and I think that “One Song Glory” would be a great match for his voice, as well as his character. As we saw in “Acafellas,” Will is still in search of his moment of fame and glory, and although he seems to have settled into getting his accolades vicariously through New Directions, I can still see him feeling the continual pull of the spotlight. “One Song Glory” would perfectly speak to Will’s need to leave his legacy and make his mark. Also, when the song’s energy level shifts (around 1:12 in the video above), I can totally see Will dancing dramatically with props and all, similar to his piano jumping moves in “Don’t Stand So Close To Me/Young Girl.”
