Idina Menzel starts work on the Glee set

January 22, 2010

It truly is a bit spooky how alike these two look. But will Idina turn out to be Rachel's birth mother?

Now that filming for the back nine episodes of Glee‘s first season is well underway, it was only a matter of time before the guest stars started appearing on set! Lea Michele let us all know through Twitter that Broadway star Idina Menzel had started her work with the gleeks earlier on this week, and since then, news has been flying about what exactly Idina, in her role as director of rival glee club Vocal Adrenaline (remember the kids who did the amazing rendition of Amy Winehouse’s “Rehab?”), will be doing in the upcoming episodes. Some of these tidbits are a bit on the spoiler-y side, so don’t follow the jump if you’d like to stay Idina-pure!

  • An article on Zap2It confirms that Idina has signed on for the entire back nine, leading to the conclusion that Vocal Adrenaline and the regionals competition are both major components of the second half of the season.
  • It seems that the earlier rumour about Idina being cast as Rachel’s birth mother shouldn’t be ruled out completely, according to Ryan Murphy. Here’s what EW‘s Michael Ausiello scooped for us: “Series creator Ryan Murphy, who acknowledges that the two share an almost spooky resemblance, isn’t ruling out such a twist. At least not completely. ‘I don’t think I’ll do that,’ he says. ‘We wrote her part as a sort of Faye Dunaway of Network. She’s the female coach of Vocal Adrenaline. That’s what she plays.'” So, it’s a possibility…though still, not a very likely one. But you can keep on hoping, Broadway fans!
  • And now for the most scandalous bit of Idina news, courtesy of a quote from executive producer Brad Falchuk to Zap2It: “She and Matt had an immediate chemistry. … Her first scene – literally it was ‘Welcome aboard,’ and they had a big makeout scene. So it was interesting for her. It was like, welcome to the show.” I’m sorry, what? The head of New Directions and the head of Vocal Adrenaline are making out? That is definitely a bad mix of business and pleasure! And what about Emma, Will?!
